Phua Chu Kang - The Musical
On Friday 10/6, I went to watch this with Mole. Haha not that I am cultured enough to specially buy tickets to a musical...Mole's grandma got them for free and so she asked me to go with her.
It was held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium and well, the both of us didn't know how to get there. So, I had to consult my street directory and bus guide as usual...I find it fun to do that. =)
Mole and I dressed up to go there...haha and Mole looked nice in that top!! Really!! ;)
Okay enough of the crap. When we finally reached, this guard stopped us to check our bags. Apparently it is a routine check. We thought at first he was going to check our bags for bombs or weapons, but he actually said to me,"Waterbottles not allowed." ... ... ...
Mole surrendered her bottle too. And so we ended up feeling super thirsty throughout the entire first half of the musical. Guess we were not allowed to bring our bottles in because they wanted us to buy food and drinks from 7-Eleven. They had some staff from 7-Eleven walking around with tidbits and drinks for us to buy.
The musical started (late!! And before that they kept playing the sponsors' advertisements repeatedly. The music in these advertisements somehow reminded me of NDP...) with someone dressed like Phua Chu Kang and singing. She is obviously female. Don't really get that part. Then Chu Kang wakes up from a nightmare about dying on his birthday. However, he decided to put that nightmare behind him and look forward to his birthday, which would be the next day. He dressed, got out of his room and went to the living room where his family members were.
Although he hinted many times, from dropping subtle hints to ostentatiously obvious hints, about his fortieth birthday, none of his family members seemed to get his hints. Finally, he got exasperated and stormed out of his house. It was then that the audience gets to realise that they had only been pretending to not get his hints...they had remembered his birthday long ago!!
After that, somehow, the rest of the family gets Chu Beng to distract Chu Kang from the living room where they are planning his birthday party because it is meant as a surprise. Guess what he did to distract Chu Kang? He sang a song about total defence! And Chu Kang joined in too later. It's so out of place and obviously done for the sake of promoting awareness of total defence. It also reminded me even more of NDP.
Okay the review in Life! only talked a bit about the musical. I shall tell all. Haha.
I especially liked the part where Margaret rattled in French-accented English and promoted herself as the best choice as a party-organiser. She can sing!! Though not really that well...but she's not bad. Really.
Frankie Foo, Chu Kang's arch rival, wants to take revenge and that is the conflict in the plot. He comes up with a clever plan of letting Chu Kang find a "long-lost brother" and making him believe that he would die on his birthday so that he might leave all his assets to his newly found brother.
The brother's name is Chu Kok and is actually one of Frankie's numerous cousins. Due to Che Kang's family members pretending to forget his birthday, Chu Kok has a chance to act as "the only brother he would need". Chu Kok dresses almost exactly like Chu Kang, thus endearing him to Chu Kok. And Chu Kok brought him to this fengshui master who predicted that three things would happen to him in the near future - he would find a long-lost brother, a big object would fall on him and he would die on his birthday. He said them in a funny rap. =) Haha and he also interacted with the audience by giving those in the front seats guaranteed-to-win 4D numbers as well as blessing them with...glitter powder. Haha. It was dark you see.
Actually, all the scenes were not bad. Though some of them were horribly out of point (e.g. the total defence one), the dances and songs were good and would shine individually. However, when put together as a story, they just didn't work out. And insufficient time was given to how Frankie and Chu Kang resolved their conflict. So much time was given to executing the plan...how come so little was given to solving the problem between Frankie and Chu Kang? Do you know how it was solved? Frankie was in the midst of taking over as the new owner of Chu Kang's house when he got a heart attack. Chu Kang saved him. Frankie was touched that Chu Kang saved him even though they were not exactly on the best of terms. And so, Frankie decided that he would rest his case. Yeah. That's it. ...
I was impressed, though, that all the music that had been played throughout was live. They had a 44-strong ensemble and a choir. Not bad. I thought the music was recorded because it sounded like that. Haha...
Thanks to Mole, though, for bringing me to a musical!! Makes me seem so cultured...haha... =)
